Dubois Elementary School

Hello families -

We have had a fantastic first week at Dubois! Your students are amazing and such a pleasure to serve.

Please review the following dismissal reminders. With over 400 students, we have designed these procedures to keep everyone safe and provide as much order as possible. I have highlighted a few sentences for our policy and procedures and am asking for your help particularly with these items:

• Parents and family members will not be allowed onto the blacktop on Illinois Street after school. If you are picking up a student, please walk around the building and meet your student at the historical entrance on Lincoln.

• This week we averaged over 25 transportation changes per day, which means at least 25 calls to teachers that interrupt instruction and require a change on our bus list, so we appreciate your understanding with our end-of-day expectations.

• 2:00 p.m. is the daily cutoff time for making changes to end-of-day student transportation.

• At 2:20 p.m. entry to the building will be prohibited and office phones will be unanswered so that our staff can coordinate our dismissal procedures. We will not answer the door or the phone after this time and there will be no early parent pickup.

2:00 p.m. is the daily cutoff time for making changes to end-of-day student transportation. After 2:00 our staff will follow the student’s regular dismissal plan as indicated on the student’s registration record. (1:00 on Wednesdays)

At 2:20 p.m. entry to the building will be prohibited and office phones will be unanswered so that our staff can coordinate our dismissal procedures. We will not answer the door or the phone after this time and there will be no early parent pickup. During that time we will be busy ensuring that all students get to their appropriate ride or after school program safely. Thank you for your understanding. (1:20 on Wednesdays) 
At 2:50 p.m. dismissal begins for all students. Students will be called from their classrooms by group and bus number. Walkers will be dismissed first and are dismissed from the historical entrance on Lincoln Avenue. Anyone picking up a walker can meet their student on the lawn in front of the historical entrance.

Car riders dismiss out of the new Illinois Street entrance. Please remain in your car the entire time through the car lane, your student will be dismissed to you by school staff. No students are allowed to re-enter the building after they leave.

Parents and family members will not be allowed onto the blacktop on Illinois Street after school. This is to ensure that our car riders are kept safe and are dismissed to the correct adult each afternoon. If you are picking up a student, please walk around the building and meet your student at the historical entrance on Lincoln with the other walkers.

Thank you to everyone for your help in making the first day of school a success! Now that day one is over, a friendly reminder about our safety and security protocols. All visitors must be buzzed into the office through the main entrance on Illinois Street, where you will sign in and receive a visitor badge. Parents and family members will not be allowed into the building to walk their student to the classroom. This policy is in place for the safety and protection of students as well as to ensure our morning procedures are timely and efficient so that students get to class on time each day.

Please join us for Meet the Teacher Night at the school TOMORROW from 5:00-6:00p.m. Come to Dubois to meet the teacher, get a glimpse of the classroom, and drop off any school supplies before school starts on Monday.

In an effort to maintain the safety of our vulnerable students in shared spaces, Dubois must be a peanut-free and orange-free school building this school year. We ask for your cooperation and mindfulness when packing your child's lunch and sending snacks and treats to school.

Please click here for a list of suggestions of safe items to send into the building. Additionally, all bulk snacks and treats (i.e. for classroom celebrations or snack stocks) will have to be brought to the main office to be double-checked for ingredient safety. We all appreciate your efforts in helping us maintain a safe and healthy environment where all of our Dragons can learn and thrive!

This is a reminder that ALL students must register for school every year. Even if your student has been attending Springfield Public Schools for several years, they must be registered for each new school year. Please complete your registration form as soon as possible if you have not already.

If you need any assistance with registration, the school office will be open next week from 7:30a.m.-4:00p.m. for in-person help. We would be more than happy to assist you!

St. John's Lutheran Church will be hosting their annual Back to School Bash for Dubois families. This FREE event is TODAY from 5:00-6:00p.m. at the church, 2477 West Washington Street.

Come let your kids "shop" for this year's school supplies for free, then enjoy an ice cream sundae to celebrate the start of a new school year.
